JOURNEY TO ORTHODOXY

Fr. George Maximov, a Moscow priest who often serves on missionary trips throughout Asia, has posted on his Facebook page the words of a Vietnamese woman who converted to Orthodoxy after the Mother of God appeared to her.

The woman, Nguyen Thi Mai Anh, a former Buddhist living and working in Vũng Tàu, Vietnam, was baptized into Holy Orthodoxy on Holy Saturday this year [2017].

She writes of “something incredible” happening in her life about a year ago: “I was lying in a coma in the hospital. During this time I saw a radiance, a bright light, and directly in front of me appeared the Virgin Mary Theotokos. She handed me a bottle of water and gave me to drink. As soon as I drank the water, the light and the Theotokos disappeared.”

“In the morning the next day,” she continues, “I suddenly came out of the coma after being unconscious for so long.” Nguyen survived, and she began to pray to the Lord Jesus Christ and His Mother for a speedy recovery, and decided she would become a Christian when she returned home.

“A few days later, another vision appeared to me in a dream, that there would be a man who would lead me to the Church, and that I would eat Bread there and drink Holy Water together with everyone, and walk around the church,” she continues.

After she was released and returned home, a friend came to her, bearing an icon of the Mother of God with the Savior. “I was incredibly happy, because it was the same image I had seen in my dream. I was very happy, and I told my friend about what I had seen in the dream, and he took me to an Orthodox Church where Russians pray in the 5th district of the city of Vũng Tàu, to meet the Lord and the Theotokos there,” Nguyen recalls.

The woman was later baptized in the same church and “born again under the protection of the Most-Holy Theotokos and by the grace of the Lord.”

“I am infinitely happy!” she exclaims, continuing, “Thanks to Thee, O Lord and to thee, O Theotokos, for my ‘second birth’ and the gift of the Fountain of Life!”

Fr. George notes that she broke her leg just before her Baptism, but this did not deter her. She was baptized with the name of Anna, and now reads prayers in the Vietnamese language during the services.

ANNUNCIATION ORTHODOX CHURCH IN NASSAU, BAHAMAS

The Feast of the Annunciation of Our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary is celebrated on March 25 each year. The Feast commemorates the announcement by the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Son of God, would become incarnate and enter into this world through her womb.

The biblical story of the Feast of the Annunciation is found in the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke (1:26-39). The Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary, who was living in Nazareth, and said to her, “Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you.” Mary was perplexed and wondered what kind of greeting this was.

The angel told her not to be afraid, for she had found favor with God. He said, “You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

Mary responded to the angel by asking how this could happen since she had no husband. The angel told her that the Holy Spirit and the power of God would come upon her, and that the child to be born of her would be called holy, the “Son of God.”

The angel then proceeded to tell the Virgin Mary that her cousin Elizabeth had conceived a son in her old age (John the Baptist), and affirmed that with God nothing is impossible.

In faith and obedience to the will of God, Mary replied to the angel, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be according to your word.” Upon her response, the angel departed.

It is on the Feast of the Annunciation, that Orthodox Christians commemorate both the divine initiative of God, whereby He took on flesh from the Virgin for our salvation, and the human response, whereby Mary freely accepted the vocation offered to her. He elected to become man, and He desired to do this with the willing agreement of her whom He chose as His mother. Mary could have refused, for she was not a passive instrument, but an active participant with a free and positive part to play in God’s plan for our salvation. Thus, when on this and other feasts the Orthodox Church honors the Theotokos, the Mother of God, it is not just because God chose her but also because she herself chose to follow His will.

HAVE FAITH – ORTHODOXY

HOLY VIRGIN MARY MOTHER OF GOD

My All-Holy Mother! I shall light the vigil lamp

because the day which is breaking is of great significance to our faith;

however, You take care and feed my children

Fr. Stephan Anagnostopoulos, Greece:

Why do we use olive oil? So that we would be reminded of the night when Jesus prayed in the garden of olives. The Lord prayed in the garden of Gethsemane where an oil grove was situated.

The following is a true story that is directly connected to the vigil lamp…

On the 24th of March 1942, the eve of the annunciation, we were in the Northern part of Greece, in my hometown called Drama. It was then under bulgarian occupation.

Deprivation, disease and famine had reached dreadful proportions and death was decimating both young and old, especially children, on a daily basis. Amongst my Continue reading “My All-Holy Mother! Western Kasai, Congo:

Nina & her mother – From Protestantism to Orthodoxy –

A miracle of Holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God

Nina, a 10-year-old girl, was the third child of a family which lived in Western Kasai (Congo). Her two previous siblings, two boys, died early, making Nina an only child.

Nina was born from a mother with strong religious interests, to such an extent that she had embraced a Protestant heresy and become a “Pastoress” (woman priest).

Nina followed her mother to Protestant gathering. However, the good reputation of the Orthodox Missionary School brought the little girl to the Orthodox school. From then on she underwent a series of internal and external changes.

As time passed, Nina began to become reluctant and unwilling to follow her mother to the Protestant gatherings. She perfectly followed—even though she wasn’t baptized—the Orthodox church gatherings. Not much time passed before the girl sought to be baptized [Orthodox]!

Her parents, and much more so her grandmother, didn’t want to hear of this. This increased Nina’s desire to receive Holy Baptism.

Her father ultimately accepted his daughter’s request, and came to the following decision: “my first two children died, one at age two and the other at age one. My little girl has turned ten. Let her be baptized, as she wants so much, because maybe she might die too!” The rest of the family complied and received his decision with sadness.

Nina thanked her heavenly and earthly father with all her heart. She went through catechism for a short time, and was found ready for baptism. She of course continues to go to her religious studies constantly, and she never missed the Divine Liturgy and Holy Communion on Sundays and Feasts.

Nina’s soul felt a deep and mystical connection with the All-Holy Person of the Most-Holy Theotokos Mary, and she went around her house and placed Her holy icon on the highest cabinet of the dining room, causing several negative reactions by the rest of the family. She withstood, however, and managed to have the holy icon of the Theotokos stay where she placed it.

On Sundays, the “Pastoress” mother of Nina received many Protestants in her house. As soon as the Protestants saw the icon of the Theotokos, they protested, and sought the Continue reading “Western Kasai, Congo: Nina & her mother – From Protestantism to Orthodoxy – A miracle of Holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God”
